Interboro was asked by a local chapter of the International Longshoremen’s Association to help drum up support for the construction of a container port on the former MOTBY site in Bayonne, NJ. Interboro responded with a 8-page broadsheet that will be mailed to everyone in Bayonne.
For Interboro, the main challenge was to reduce a highly complex, highly contentious, and many-sided story into something clear and simple without oversimplifying or being disingenuous. Another challenge had to do with the audience. On the one hand, you have this perfectly rational justification for the container port. It’s so easy to argue, for example, that it is perfectly positioned in the region, that the existing ports are maxed-out, that the new “S-Class” ships can’t fit under the Bayonne Bridge, that the Feds just spent $2 billion dredging a channel to this peninsula. If you’re a regional planner, this peninsula should be a port. On the other hand, if you’re not a regional planner, none of these things matter at all. For example, if you’re a homeowner (our audience), what matters to you is: Will a container port increase or decrease my property taxes? Will it increase or decrease taxes? If you’re the Mayor, of course, what matters to you is: will it get me re-elected?
