Interboro has been happy to see some articles about blotting, a term we introduced in our winning submission to 2004’s Shrinking Cities International Ideas Competition and then expanded on in “Improve Your Lot!,” a paper we published in Verb Crisis and Cities Growing Smaller.
“Empty places: It’s not squatting…it’s blotting” appears on BEZ91.5, and “Is Blotting the Best Solution for Shrinking Cities?” appears on The Atlantic Cities.
It has been great to see this funny word we coined seven years ago popping up so often in the discourse around shrinking cities. But it is even better that the idea that the approach we have been advocating for, namely, rewarding the people who “stuck it out” by letting them spread out, is being taken seriously. It remains our hope that Wanda, Helen, Victor, The Anderanin family, and all the other blotters we met in Detroit will show the city the best way forward!
